How Susan Got Started

susantoddlersSusan Turben started her career as a parent/Head Start teacher, during the summer of 1966. She started the first home visiting program for Head Start and the first Infant Stimulation Program in New York State that same fall. Her professional love and work has been home-based ever since. Dr. Turben worked in low income sectors as a family outreach visitor, focusing on parent education for families whose lives are affected by conditions from giftedness to abuse, violence and the old fashioned version of “poverty.”

From 1978 to the present time Dr. Turben has served as an assistant professor of teacher education and early childhood education at graduate and post graduate levels and developed community advocacy programs to assist families through agency collaboration. She formed her company, Turben Developmental Services, in 1983 to provide services free of cost to families referred to her through the courts, schools and community. In 1987, Dr. Turben received her Ph.D. in two disciplines, Special Education and Early Childhood Education from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio.

Among Dr. Turben’s most unique areas of expertise, she specializes in: infant-toddler early intervention and educational inclusion for children of school age, as well as research which identifies individual temperamental skills and talents among very young children. She provides consultative services infant mental health, childcare and child welfare organizations.

Dr. Turben has developed an extensive website and four video productions entitled, the “Good Information Child Development Media” series. She currently consults with child care programs in St. Petersburg, Russia.
