STATE OF UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
Susan H. Turben
Voyageur: Trail blazer, Pioneer, Overcoming harsh struggles, demonstrating an adventurous spirit, opening new frontiers of learning, building a strong community, caring deeply for family and friends. Faced with growing children and a serious illness in the family, you became one of the pioneer students at Empire State College in 1971. Seventeen months after entering, you became the second graduate of the college. You continued as a trail blazer in offering low-cost parent education services to families and professionals. You opened new territories in innovative early intervention services for infants, young children and their families. You have the unique gift of seeing learning with the eyes of a child, as in "Toys that actually teach academic skills," or with the eyes of parents who find your web-based "Parents Tool Box" an invaluable resource for understanding how children grow and develop. Internationally acclaimed, our teaching has taken you across the world from upstate New York to the far reaches of Russia. You believe that strong communities and vibrant cultures nurture strong families. As an activist, volunteer, and philanthropist, you have supported education at all levels, health care, the arts and fairness in the media. Your devotion to Empire State College, especially in encouraging and supporting faculty excellence, has strengthened this institution immeasurably. For your distinguished, pioneering accomplishments in family-centered education and care, your generous civic spirit, and your zest for lifelong learning, the State University of New York, Empire State College, proudly confers upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
