Susan H. Turben Chair and Mentoring Guidelines

Susan H. Turben Chair in Mentoring

Guidelines

Purpose

The Turben Chair in Mentoring is awarded each year to an Empire State College faculty member who demonstrates the capacity to advance scholarship and best practice in mentoring. The Turben Chair was created to promote excellence in mentoring as the primary relationship between the college’s adult students and faculty working together in person and online.

The chair is named in honor of Dr. Susan H. Turben, the second graduate of the college and an internationally recognized expert on families and child development, who has been a long-time supporter of the mentoring model and professional development for the college’s faculty mentors. The chair is supported through an endowment from the Susan and John Turben Foundation.

Eligibility

The Turben Chair in Mentoring may be awarded to any Empire State College faculty member with the potential to make a significant contribution to the theory, research and practice of mentoring. Both experienced faculty and newer faculty are eligible to be appointed as Turben Chair.

Selection Process

  • The office of academic affairs receives proposals for nominations and identifies potential candidates. The office of academic affairs ordinarily issues a general invitation to the college community for suggestions by December 1 for the next academic year.
  • The associate provost brings one or more nominations to a screening committee made up of faculty recognized for their commitment to mentoring of all kinds and Empire State College Foundation board members supportive of faculty development and mentoring. The screening committee may include one or more former Turben Chairs. The associate provost convenes the screening committee.
  • The screening committee reviews materials in support of the proposed candidate(s) and makes a recommendation to the provost.
  • The appointment of the Turben Chair is announced at the All College Conference prior to the start of the appointment.

Support for the Turben Chair

The Turben Chair will be appointed for a period of one year, ordinarily beginning September 1 and ending the following August 31. The Chair will receive a $6,000 stipend, a half-time reduction in teaching/mentoring responsibilities, and funding for travel and research expenses. Backfill funding is provided to the Chair’s center.

Expectations of Turben Chair

  • Develop a proposal for activities and a plan for use of research and travel funds by June 1 of the year in which the Turben Chair appointment starts.
  • Work with the associate provost to finalize the plan by the start of the appointment.
  • Provide quarterly updates to the associate provost.
  • Provide a report within 60 days of the end of the appointment.
  • Disseminate the outcomes of the activities within the college and with appropriate external audiences.
  • Communicate with the Turben Foundation about the Turben Chair activities through the vice president for external affairs.

Oversight of Program

  • The program is administered by the associate provost and staff in the office of academic affairs.
  • The associate provost and office of academic affairs staff work with the dean, office of human resources, the vice president for external affairs, Empire State College Foundation staff, and the financial analyst responsible for ESC Foundation accounts on processes related to the chair’s appointment, release time, stipend, expenses, backfill to center and communication with the program founders.
