The ABC’s of Positive Parenting for Foster Parents

 

I.   THESE ARE EMERGENCY ACTION PRINCIPLES - CERTIFICATION IS ESSENTIAL;  Take a Red Cross Course

 

 

A.  Supplies - make a kit and place it in the kitchen; place second one in the bathroom; buy mouth guard, rubber gloves and plastic bags.

 

 

B.  Safe rescue for breathing, bleeding, poisoning, choking, burns, punctures and rashes:

 

                        Assess the situation - “Are you okay”? - observe carefully 

 

                        Care (head tilt, chin lift)  slow check  2 slow full breaths, 1 every 5 seconds

 

                        Telephone - when safe

 

  1. Breathing - use CPR - watch carefully, have another person monitor the air puffs
  2. Bleeding - use heel of hand; elevate; keep pressure constant
  3. Poisoning - call 9-1-1, administer Ipecac syrup, side position
  4. Choking or obstruction - fist into abdomen, lift, Heimlich maneuver from rear position, or                                    
    front chest lift
  5. Burns - no butter, no ice, nothing, or cool water
  6. Puncture wounds, abrasions - knees and elbows - clean with soap and water/astringent,  
    pretreated pads, large gauze pads laid loosely over wound, taped - no vaseline
  7. Rashes, bee stings, hives - ice therapy
