A.     Language, Social, Emotional Development-Positive

  1.  Smiles - Does teacher/parent smile?
  2. Praises child - Does teacher/parent give child both verbal ("good boy") and (hugs, kisses) approval when child does a task or activity of any kind?
  3. Calls child by name - Does teacher/parent speak the child's name when addressing him/her or moving about the room ("Hi John"), ("Come over here Debbie")?
  4.  Converses with child - Does teacher/parent use sentences, phrases, questions, descriptions while doing any routine or play activity (dressing, feeding, sitting, rocking) with child?  Does teacher/parent label verbally, objects in environment?  ("See the water?"), ("That's a ball.")
  5.  Repeats words and sounds child makes - Does teacher/parent imitate words and sound child makes?  ("ugh-oh")
  6. Eye contact and eye checks on child's well-being - Does teacher/parent look directly into child's eyes?  Does teacher/parent use his eyes to scan the room to see what children are doing?
  7. Provides physical closeness through touching - Does teacher/parent pat, pick up, rub, squeeze, tickle, fondle child?  Does teacher/parent pick up child and hold him/her close to body while carrying him/her or giving him/her care?
  8. Provides sensory awareness games or activities - Does teacher/parent whistle, sing, hum, read to child?  Does teacher/parent change child's position, swings him/her, rolls him/her?  Does teacher/parent place toys close to child?  Does teacher/parent place objects in child's hands?
  9. Comforts child promptly by holding child - Does teacher/parent immediately go to child and pick him/her up when child is crying, calling out, or fussy?

B.   Negative Observations

  1. Handles child roughly when bathing, feeding, dressing or changing  /her - Does teacher/parent haul, grab, pull child when handling child?
  2. Criticizes child - Does teacher/parent use words like, ("he's bad" or "spoiled") when talking about the child?  Does teacher/parent call child by negative ("ugh-you're dirty"), or ("you're a little pig")?
  3. Forbids, threatens child - Does teacher/parent phrase instructions in a negative fashion or tone, i.e., "get out of here!"?
  4. Punishes, retrains physically - Does teacher/parent remove child from other children for any reason other than safety or health reasons?
  5.  Isolates child physically - Does teacher/parent remove child from other children for any reason other than safety or health reasons?
  6. Ignores child when child shows need for attention - Does teacher/parent walk by or look away from child who is crying, fussy, acting up?
  7. Talks negatively to other adults about child in front of child - Does teacher/parent tell about child's behavior or problems when conversing with other staff as if child were not there i.e., speaking over child's head?
