Communication: Talk
Tell the child what you are going to do before you do it. Touch and rub shoulders, face, palms, wrists, etc. as you begin to get them to move.
Improve mobility by doing some of these large muscle activities. Start by doing deep knee bends. Make big circles in the air with their arms. Extend one leg in front, then to the side and extend the leg to the back. Try the same movements with each arm. Place their hands on their shoulders, hands on their waist and their hands on your hands mirroring each other’s movements.
Walk between a narrow area, such as the area near a wall next to a bed. Make an obstacle course out of furniture, broom sticks, tires, etc. Use a Twister game mat and let the child practice placing their foot on the different footprints on the mat. Pretend to mountain climb by moving arms in an upward movement while taking large steps forward. Practice walking backwards.
Improve fine motor skills, by crumbling paper or foil. Place an egg carton on the floor and let the child practice throwing pennies into the carton.
