Snowy Day Specials

-
Use an old plastic baby bathtub for a sled. (Punch a hole in the rim and attach a rope.) It won’t go too fast, and the sides will keep a small child from falling out.
-
Let a toddler use a dustpan for a snow shovel - right size, right height.
-
Teach the kids to play a game of chase in the snow. Draw a big circle by shuffling through the snow and bisect it two ways at right angles. The players can run only on the lines.
-
Or show them how to make angels in the snow by lying down spread-eagle, moving arms up and down and legs together and apart.
-
Fill a plastic squeeze or spray bottle with water to which you have added food coloring, so kids can draw on the snow or “paint” a snowman.
-
Put special marks on a large outdoor thermometer to let children know when they must wear jackets, boots and other heavy clothing. (And also mark summer temperatures – when it’s warm enough for picnics and water play.)
-
Put a coating of petroleum jelly on kids’ cheeks to protect them in cold or windy weather.
-
Put inexpensive rubber gloves on over children’s knit gloves to keep hands dry.
